Santhanam's upcoming film A1: Accused No. 1, starring Santhanam in the lead, has been embroiled in controversy with the Hindu Tamizhar Katchi (HTK) filing a complaint that the film hurts the sentiments of the Brahmin communityi.

The teaser that was released recently has a brahmin woman eating an omlette to prove her love for the hero and this apparently did not go too well with the HTK members who have now filed a complaint with the Chennai Police Commissioner stating that such scenes would create an enimity between caste groups.

‘Brahmins should foster progressive thinking’

‘Purohits now shown in bad light’

‘Purohits now shown in bad light’

Mysuru:  “Purohit is the one who wishes for welfare of the society, but nowadays, social media is showing them in bad light,” said historian Dr. Shelvapillai Iyengar.

He was speaking at a meeting organised to discuss on the subject ‘Hardships faced by Hindu Priests (Purohits and Archakas)’ in Krishnamurthypuram Sriramamandira in city on Thursday.

“One has to study Vedas and Shastra to become a Purohit. Only those who have studied Vedas for ten years should be called as a good Purohit and for at least two years one needs to study Vedas seriously to take up the profession,” he added.

“Purohits are working for betterment of the society since olden days. They guide householders during auspicious ceremonies and festivals. They are offering selfless service to the society. But certain vested interests are spreading false propaganda about Purohits which they should stop,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, City and District Brahmin Association President D.T. Prakash said ‘Purohits always try to imbibe self-confidence among householders by performing necessary rituals. Association is planning to start helpline for Brahmin community with 15 Conveners in all the districts.”

During his speech, Social worker K. Raghuram Vajpayee said that there is a great demand for young Vedic scholars in foreign countries.
Brahmin youth should study Vedas and work in an organised manner for betterment of Purohits.

Sri Abhinava Ramanuja Swamiji, Uttaradi Mutt Administrator Aniruddha Acharya, Krishnadhama President Krishnadas Puranik, Archakas Association president Krishnamurthy, leaders H.G. Giridhar, Gopal Rao, C.V. Parthasarathi, Shankara Narayana Shastri, Prahlad, Manjunath Shastri, Prashant, Suresh Mulluru, M.R. Balakrishna, Apoorva Suresh, Vikram Iyengar, Jayasimha Sridhar, Kadakola Jagadish, Suchendra, Chakrapani, K.M. Nishanth and others were present.

Nowadays, just for a meagre salary Rs.10,000, Purohits are working in temples and their situation is going from bad to worse. In earlier days, under the patronage of Maharajas, Brahmins used to get land and other necessary aids for their livelihood and earned respect from all, but now the time has changed. Purohits should now establish a separate Association to address these issues. Brahmin Association must lend ears to listen to their woes, says Dr. Shelvapillai Iyengar, Historian.

SVU, SVVU hit by faculty crunch

Tirupati: SV University and SV Vedic University both are running many departments without permanent faculty. Due various reasons for the past 10 years, the AP government has not been taking steps to fill the faculty vacancies in the two universities.

SV University is the second oldest university in the state, but it faces with shortage of teaching faculty. Every year, SVU higher officials are recruiting the academic consultants to fill the teaching staff gaps in various departments.

The total number of vacant posts of professors, associate professors and assistant posts come to more than 350 in SV University alone. In addition, every month, a few professors' posts become vacant due to superannuation.

Two years ago, AP Government had issued notification for recruiting the permanent faculty through APPSC exam. But this notification was kept pending by AP High Court due to legal problems. Now also SV University officials called for interviews to select academic consultants in statistics, civil, electrical, mechanical, electronic engineering , food technology, bio technology, psychology, physic, history and other departments.

Similarly, SV Vedic University also called for interviews to select contract lecturers in various subjects like Zoology, Botany, Mathematics, Economics, English, Computer, Food Technology and Yoga Science departments. The university is running purely depending up on contract lecturers only. Vedic University was established in Tirupati in 2006 to popularise Vedic studies across the country.

TTD is funding to this university activities for protecting the Vedic Knowledge and to take Vedas to future generations. But even after 13 years, Rig-Veda, Krishna Yajur Veda, SriVaishnavam and other Vedic Studies departments are facing severe shortage of permanent faculty.

Students of SVU and SV Vedic varsity have been facing hardships to learn lessons with inadequate teaching strength. After YSRCP came to power, the AP higher Education Department did not take measures to appoint permanent faculty in SVU and SVVU in Tirupati.

Previously in SVU the then TDP government had appointed its students organisation TNSF leaders as academic consultants in various departments. The students are demanding to appoint permanent faculty to run the classes without delay of academic procedures.

SVU SFI leader N Madav Krishan said, ``Several times we had given representations to the then Vice-Chancellor Damodaram and another former V-C VVN Rajendra Prasad to fill the faculty vacancies on permanent basis. But the problem continues for years.

Jagan once again given preference to Brahmins

Jagan once again given preference to Brahmins
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has once again given preference to the Brahmin community by appointing Dronamraju Srinivas as a chairman of Visakhapatnam Metro Region Development Authority (VMRDA).
Mr Jagan has given the ticket to four Brahmins in the recent assembly elections and two of them have won.

Dronamraju is one of them who lost the election from Visakhapatnam South assembly constituency. The other is Akramani Vijayanirmala from Visakhapatnam East assembly constituency.

Only Kona Raghupathi from Bapatla assembly constituency and Malladi Vishnu from Vijayawada Central have won it in the elections. But, the Chief Minister has honoured them by electing Kona Raghupathi as Deputy Speaker.

Now, leaving out all the leaders who were in the party from the inception in Visakhapatnam district, Mr Jagan has appointed Dronamraju as Chairman of VMRDA though he has joined the party just before elections.

This shows that Mr YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is still trying to own the Brahmin community as much as possible.

However, this move will be hurting the leaders in the district, those who are working for the party from the beginning.
